CT RollerGirls Announces Winner of Cindy Luberto Scholarship for Women Athletes
The CT RollerGirls (CTRG), Connecticut’s premier women’s roller derby league, has chosen the 2015 recipient of the league’s Cindy Luberto Scholarship for Women Athletes.
Grace Ziemke of Southbury, Conn., a senior at Pomperaug High School, was selected as this year’s honoree. She will receive a grant of $500 to use toward her college education.
In addition to completing the necessary scholarship application, Ziemke was also required to write a 250-word essay about her sport of choice, in this case ballet. In her essay, Ziemke acknowledged that some people scoff at the idea of ballet as a sport.
“Amongst the rolls of tulle and strains of Tchaikovsky are sweaty, hardworking young men and women, repeating jumps across the floor until it becomes second nature,” Ziemke wrote. “Beyond the pink and lavender walls, children too young to attend school are learning persistence, patience, and poise.”
Ziemke also used the essay to reflect on her 13-year career in ballet.
“I have danced in Coppelia, Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and, appropriately this year’s Graduation Ball. On April 26, 2015, I will twist my last bun, step my last pas de chat, and perform my last show,” she wrote.
Ziemke is expected to attend Ohio University in the fall.
CTRG awards the Cindy Luberto Scholarship annually with the philosophy that women athletes come from many backgrounds and enjoy a variety of sports. Recognizing that only those excelling in more traditional sports receive recognition with athletic awards and scholarships, the Cindy Luberto award is open to female-identifying athletes who participate in athletic endeavors both traditional and unconventional.
The $500 scholarship is nonrenewable and paid directly to the educational institution upon verification of enrollment in the fall semester, for use toward tuition, fees and education-related expenses. All submissions are reviewed by CTRG, and winners are determined by a league vote.
